Make your laundry room more energy efficient – and a more efficient place to do household chores like clothes washing. With these tips compiled by PSNC Energy, it's easy.
- If you don't have a dedicated utility or laundry space, create one. Consider transforming a space such as a mudroom or breezeway. Ideally, you should have a space that's approximately 10 feet square to accommodate all sorting, ironing, folding and drying. However, a smaller space, if properly planned, can give you the room you need for most of these activities.
- Make sure the space is properly insulated and has the necessary plumbing and water connections. (Consult a plumber if necessary.)
- Natural gas is a clean, efficient fuel for drying clothes economically. New gas dryers are designed for efficiency with features such as pilotless ignition and automatic shutoff. Look for models that offer electronic sensor drying. They use an electronic moisture-sensing device that "feels" the degree of moisture in the clothes. When the degree of dryness selected is reached, the dryer automatically shuts off.
- Consider dryers with an automatic cool-down feature. A timed interval at the end of the drying cycle when tumbling continues with the heat off to reduce wrinkling of heat-sensitive synthetic fabrics and no-iron finishes.
- When installing a new dryer, vent it to the outside to carry moisture-laden air out of your home. Flexible venting is not recommended; it tends to obstruct air flow and collects lint in its grooves.
- Consider a clothes washer with the ENERGY STAR label for optimum cleaning that uses less water and energy to operate.
- Install a utility sink. It's great for hand washing clothing items that require special care, as well as quick clean ups.
- Never worry about running out of hot water by installing an energy efficient natural gas water heater. Consider a tankless model. In addition to saving space, you'll only pay for hot water when you actually use it.
- Good lighting is a must. Install ENERGY STAR labeled fixtures. Replace existing bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs that burn less hot than halogens or incandescent bulbs and use less energy to operate.
- A counter top or other surface is ideal for sorting and folding clothes. It also can serve as a place where you do quick mending jobs or stain removal. Consider installing a cabinet with a countertop so you can maximize storage space. Overhead shelving or cabinetry also allows you to keep cleaning and other supplies within reach.
- If floor space is available, use this room for ironing. Storage for the board, an iron, water and starch is needed. Although considered old-fashioned by many, a built-in ironing board is a very good space-saving arrangement. Consider installing a rod or other type of hanging rack so you can hang clothes up as soon as they come out of the dryer or when you're finished ironing.
- Make ironing and other chores a more tolerable task and install a specially designed, space-saving TV. Or, at least make sure your laundry room is wired for sound so you can wash to your favorite tunes.
- Look for innovative appliances and products that can save time and space. For example, Whirlpool Corporation offers the Whirlpool Family Studio, a multi-functional space that combines the latest in high-tech clothing care, such as the ImPress Ironing Station, SinkSpa Jetted Sink, DryAire Drying Cabinet, Duet Fabric Care System, and Personal Valet Clothes Revitalizing System. The full set of appliances can be encased in custom cabinetry to enhance the look of the room.
- Install interior doors that reduce noise from washers and dryers in other rooms throughout the house.
