Don't lose sleep over a bedroom remodeling job. Try some of the ideas from PSNC Energy.
- Stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter by installing energy efficient windows. (If you can't replace your windows, check for leaks and repair them.) Consider those with the ENERGY STAR label.
- Bring in healthy natural light with a skylight or larger windows. Consider innovative windows options like those with glass that automatically adjusts to light levels.
- If you suffer from allergies, replace carpeting with hardwood floors or natural stone. Use easy-to-wash, easy-to-replace area rugs for warmth, comfort and the ability to change your bedrooms look with the switch of a rug. Consider a natural gas radiant heat floor system to warm up the floor – and the entire room.
- Maximize space and storage with built-in furniture. For example, consider a built-in headboard that also provides storage or built-in shelves with doors that can serve as a dresser, linen cabinet or extra storage.
- Install a programmable thermostat that will turn the heat down at night while you sleep but have the house toasty warm when you wake up.
- Create a haven for renewal and relaxation with water features like a fountain or waterfall suspended from the wall.
- Enhance the ambiance of your bedroom with sound. Install speakers that disappear into the ceiling or walls, or choose wireless models that eliminate messy cords.
- Play with lighting to create the desired effects. Wall sconces are better mood setters than harsh overhead lights. (If you must have overhead lighting, put it on a dimmer switch so you can set the mood.) Look for light fixtures with the ENERGY STAR label.
- Create the right ambiance for romantic with the flip of a switch. Install a natural gas fireplace to heat things up. Consider a romantically inspired two-way fireplace that can be used between the bedroom and master bath. Or, install a corner unit that allows you to create a tucked away, intimate seating area.
- If your preferred place to read is in bed, install padded headboards to make the experience more comfortable.
- If your bedroom is oversized, add a wall or a privacy screen to create a separate room for use as a home office, meditation room or reading space.
- If your bedroom is small, steal space from adjacent rooms to enlarge it. If you've got an extra spare bedroom adjacent to it, consider combining the spaces. Or use a walk-in closet to expand your bedroom space, and store clothes in a freestanding wardrobe unit.
