May 16, 2011...PSNC Energy has donated $25,000 to support ongoing relief efforts of The American Red Cross following last month’s tornadoes that ripped through central and eastern North Carolina. PSNC Energy‘s service territory includes some of the hardest hit counties.
“Many of our Raleigh and Sanford employees saw the devastation of these storms firsthand, so we know recovery is going to take some time,” said PSNC Energy President and Chief Operating Officer Rusty Harris. “We believe the best way our company can help area families in need is to support the work of the American Red Cross.”
Today is the one-month anniversary of the April storms, and total cost associated with the Red Cross response is already approaching $4 million. The Red Cross expects to continue working with storm victims for the next several months.
Since the afternoon of April 16, the Red Cross and its team of volunteers have provided food, housing and emotional support to North Carolina tornado victims - operating as many as 16 shelters across central and eastern North Carolina. As a result of the violent weather:
- More than 500 homes were destroyed
- Approximately 1600 households were displaced
- 24 people lost their life
Those who want to help people affected by this North Carolina disaster, as well as other countless crises at home and around the world, can make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Such gifts will enable the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other disaster assistance. To make a donation, visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Contributions may also be mailed to American Red Cross at P.O. Box 57066, Charlotte, NC 28206 or at P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
