January Cold Shatters Records at PSNC Energy

Gastonia, N.C. (Feb. 6, 2014) - Due to colder than normal weather, natural gas utility PSNC Energy set new daily and monthly throughput records for its pipeline system in January.

To meet customer demand, the natural gas utility sent out nearly 653,000 dekatherms of natural gas Jan. 7. The previous record was 609,000 dekatherms, set on Jan. 16, 2009.

PSNC Energy also set a new monthly throughput record in January, sending out more than 14,176,000 dekatherms. The previous monthly high was January 2010 with 13,044,000 dekatherms.

“Based on our weather data, last month was the coldest January our customers have experienced in the more than 25 years,” said Terina Cronin, PSNC Energy’s general manager of customer service operations. “In fact, compared to January 2013, last month was about 42 percent colder.”

With more of winter still ahead, PSNC Energy continues to encourage homeowners to take steps that can hold down heating costs.

  • Set the thermostat at 68°F. Each degree above 68° can significantly increase heating costs.
  • Caulk around windows and replace old weather stripping around doors to keep the cold air out.
  • Check air filters. Dirty air filters increase your energy usage and can also damage your heating system. Be sure to use filters approved for your specific system.

PSNC Energy customers can also enroll in the company’s budget billing program, which can help avoid bill fluctuations, particularly weather-related ones. Based on a home’s usage history, PSNC Energy will estimate bills for the next 12 months and spread that amount into 12 equal payments. For more details on the Budget Billing program or to sign up, customers can call toll-free at 1-877-776-2427 or visit psncenergy.com/budgetbill.

January’s abnormal cold will certainly be reflected in most heating bills, and PSNC Energy always wants to help customers weather the effects of bitter temperatures. Customers with payment concerns are encouraged to call before the due date of their payment. PSNC Energy customer service representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-877-776-2427.
