Sept. 8, 2004 - With many people returning to their homes or place of business following the recent flooding throughout the Asheville region, PSNC Energy urges its customers to exercise extreme caution regarding their natural gas service. For safety purposes, PSNC turned off natural gas service to approximately 250 of its customers throughout the Asheville region.
PSNC would like to offer the following tips to customers returning to their homes or place of business to help keep them safe:
If you smell natural gas (odor of rotten eggs) or see a broken gas line, do not light any matches or turn on/off any light switches, leave the location immediately, and call 1-877-776-2427 or the N.C. One Call Center, Inc. at 1-800-632-4949. If your home or business was flooded and the natural gas appliances were under water, do not attempt to operate the appliances. Contact your plumber or a qualified appliance service contractor for a safety inspection. This recommendation also applies to heating and air units that are located outside. When protecting damaged roofs, be sure to allow air to flow through the natural gas vent. Do not cover a natural gas vent with tarps or other coverings. Blocking the vent can create a potential hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning. If your natural gas venting is damaged, you should contact a plumber or a qualified service contractor for natural gas appliances. If you feel your natural gas meter has been damaged due to recent flooding, notify PSNC Energy immediately. If your natural gas meter is damaged, it must be repaired or replaced by PSNC.
Call PSNC Energy if you do not have natural gas after the service has been restored in your area.
Please call the company's toll free number 1-877-776-2427, for further assistance.
