April 30, 2004 - Gastonia, N.C. - PSNC Energy’s Homework Center at Pisgah Elementary School is holding a student recognition program May 4. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. in the school’s library. PSNC Energy will award certificates to all the homework center students as well as recognize the academic achievements of the program’s most improved students. “PSNC Energy feels a strong commitment to be part of the communities we serve in North Carolina, and we are proud to recognize the work of our homework center students and teachers at Pisgah Elementary,” said Don Hallingse, PSNC Energy’s director of external relations for the company’s Asheville region.
A total of 50 students from third through fifth grades participate in the after-school homework program, which is divided into two sessions. Twenty-five students attend on Mondays and Wednesdays while the other half are on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Melody Davis, a media specialist at Pisgah Elementary, manages the homework center program. Pisgah Elementary faculty members Tina Smith, Charlotte Green and Kim Williams serve on the homework center teaching staff.
Pisgah Elementary is one of six schools in PSNC Energy’s North Carolina service territory hosting a homework center for the 2003-2004 school year. PSNC Energy Homework Centers provide a safe and structured study environment where students can complete their class assignments and learn proper study skills. Each homework center operates with a certified teacher who is responsible for the total management of the program. In addition to a certified teacher, PSNC Energy also provides funds for an assistant teacher and a supplement for snacks and student incentives.
PSNC Energy is in its fourth year sponsoring homework centers. The company adopted the award-winning program from its parent company, SCANA Corporation. SCANA operates homework centers in both South Carolina and Georgia.
PSNC Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of SCANA, is franchised to serve a 28-county service area in North Carolina and distributes natural gas to approximately 395,000 winter-peak customers in 96 cities and communities ranging from the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill areas in the north central part of the state; the Concord, Statesville and Gastonia area in the Piedmont; and the Asheville, Hendersonville and Brevard areas in the western part of the state.
Pisgah Elementary is located at 1495 Pisgah Highway in Candler.
